What is ethical non-monogamy?
Ethical non-monogamy, or ENM, means having more than one sexual or romantic partner, with the full knowledge and agreement of everyone involved. It’s an umbrella term. Open relationships, polyamory, swinging and hotwifing all sit under it. What they share is honesty: nobody is lied to, and nobody is a secret.
Some people say consensual non-monogamy (CNM) instead, and mean the same thing. Here’s what ENM covers, the words people use, how couples tend to make it work, and three openings from stories about it.
What does ENM mean in practice?
Three things make a relationship ethically non-monogamous:
- More than one partner is possible. That might mean sex only, dates, or full relationships, depending on the people.
- Everyone knows. Partners know about each other, at least in outline. A new date knows there’s a spouse or partner.
- Everyone agreed. Not once, years ago, but in an ongoing way. Agreements get revisited as people change.
Take away any one of those and it’s something else. Without the knowing and the agreeing, it’s cheating.
The main kinds of ENM
| What it usually means | Feelings for others? | |
|---|---|---|
| Open relationship | A couple who may each see other people, often separately | Depends on the couple |
| Polyamory | More than one loving relationship at the same time | Yes, that’s the point |
| Swinging | Couples swapping partners with other couples, usually together | Mostly not |
| Hotwife | A wife seeing others, with her husband’s encouragement | Usually not |
| Monogamish | Mostly monogamous, with agreed exceptions now and then | Usually not |
Plenty of people don’t fit neatly into one box, and the labels overlap. A couple might start by swinging and drift toward an open relationship, or the other way around.
How do couples make it work?
- Talk first, and for longer than seems necessary. Why each of you wants it, what you’re afraid of, and whether one of you is going along to keep the other happy.
- Make agreements. Who, where, how much you’ll tell each other, what’s off the table, and how either of you can pause it. Many couples revisit them every few months.
- Plan time. A shared calendar is a running joke in ENM circles because it’s so common. Time is the thing that runs out first.
- Take sexual health seriously. Talk about testing and protection with every partner, honestly.
- Treat jealousy as information. It shows up for most people. Good couples talk about it instead of hiding it or treating it as failure.
ENM words you’ll run into
- Compersion. Feeling happy because your partner is happy with someone else. Sometimes called the opposite of jealousy.
- Metamour. Your partner’s other partner.
- Primary or nesting partner. The person you live with or share the most of your life with, in setups that rank relationships.
- Hierarchy. Whether some relationships come first. Some people practice it and some reject it.
- Unicorn. A single person, usually a woman, who dates a couple. See threesome stories.
Three openings
Three openings written for this page. They stop before anything explicit. Open one to read how it starts.
Same Mirror
Married nine years, open for two months. Tonight they both have a date, and one bathroom.
Read the opening
“Not those earrings,” Ben said.
Laila looked at him in the mirror. He was holding two shirts and wearing neither. “You’re going on your first date in fifteen years and you’re critiquing my earrings?”
“Somebody has to.” He held up the shirts. “Which one says ‘I’m relaxed about this’?”
“Neither. You’re not relaxed. Wear the blue one.” She swapped the earrings. He was right, which was annoying. “Text me when you get there.”
“You text me.” He buttoned the blue shirt wrong, and she fixed it, and they stood there a second longer than they needed to, both of them nervous, both of them grinning.
What happens next?
- Skip to midnight, at the kitchen table, telling each other everything
- Her date first, from start to finish
- His date first, and he’s terrible at it
The Metamour
Her boyfriend’s wife invited her to dinner. It’s going better than anyone planned.
Read the opening
Rosa had rehearsed the evening in the car. She hadn’t rehearsed liking Inez this much.
“He told me you’d argue with me about the soup,” Inez said, “and I said good, nobody argues with me about soup.”
Across the table, Sam was watching the two of them with the look of a man who had expected a polite truce and got something else. He kept opening his mouth and closing it again.
“He’s worried,” Inez said, not looking at him.
“He’s always worried,” Rosa said.
Inez laughed, and topped up Rosa’s water, and asked her the question Sam never had.
What happens next?
- Rosa answers it, honestly
- Sam finally says what he’s worried about
- Inez walks Rosa to her car, alone
Monogamish
Twenty-two years, one rule, and a conference in Denver where the rule is about to come up.
Read the opening
The rule was Marcy’s idea, years ago: once a year, if something came up while one of them was away, it was allowed, as long as they told each other the whole thing afterward.
In twenty-two years, it had never once come up.
“So,” Marcy said on the phone from Denver. Her voice was strange.
Dale put down the dish he was drying. “So.”
“There’s a man who keeps sitting next to me in sessions. He’s funny. He knows I’m married.” A pause. “I wanted to hear you say it was still okay. Before, not after.”
Dale found that he was smiling at the kitchen window.
What happens next?
- He says yes, and asks her to call him after
- He asks her to stay on the phone a while first
- He books a flight to Denver
Ethical non-monogamy in stories
ENM gives a story everything it needs: nerves, rules, more than one person with their own history, and the conversation afterward. The best of these stories keep the main relationship at the center and treat every partner as a person. See erotica for couples, swinger stories and hotwife stories. On metime, you can ask for one in your own words. Everyone is an adult, everyone knows, and everyone wants to be there.
Questions
What does ENM mean?
ENM stands for ethical non-monogamy: having more than one sexual or romantic partner, with everyone’s knowledge and agreement. On dating apps, “ENM” in a profile usually means the person is partnered and open, or single and dating people who are.
Is ethical non-monogamy the same as polyamory?
No. Polyamory is one kind of ethical non-monogamy, the one built around loving more than one person. ENM also covers open relationships, swinging and hotwifing, which are often more about sex than romance.
What is an open relationship?
An open relationship is one where both partners agree they may see other people, usually separately. Couples set their own rules about who, how often and what they share with each other.
Is ethical non-monogamy cheating?
No. Cheating depends on a secret or a broken promise. In ENM everyone knows and has agreed, and breaking the agreed rules would still count as cheating.
What is compersion?
Compersion is the happiness you feel when your partner is happy with someone else. Not everyone feels it, and people who do often still feel jealous sometimes too.
